Overview
MindSlate® X (SlateX) is your personal productivity, information, and task management app.
Here’s a quick overview to help you navigate the app better:
Item: Any entry you add in the app is an Item. It can be either:
Information, or
Task – a Plain Task or an Advanced Task with attributes like Due Date, etc.
Each item can include:
One Attachment currently supports (photo/image),
A series of connected Thoughts (ideas, follow-ups, reflections).
Group: Items can be organized into Groups.
The special group All is default and reserved—it contains all items, including those assigned to other groups and ungrouped ones.
App has three major sections:
Dashboard – control center for the app and all items.
MagicSlate – where you create each item.
SmartViewer – where you view and take actions on items.
Quick Q&A
What is the first thing I need to do?
Getting Started with SlateX
There’s no strict setup, but here’s a helpful checklist:
One-time Activities:
Replace 'Self' with your nickname in the Settings screen
Set Disable Battery Optimization in Settings (for the task masters 😄)
On first use of Magicpad > More Task Options or Detect Object (Quick Reminder), allow Alarms & Reminders (for Android 12+)
Then (Optional but Recommended):
Set a Privacy PIN in More Settings
Create a group via the Groups link on the Dashboard
Select your new group from the Group Selector on the Dashboard
Tap the ‘+’ icon to write your first task or information item
Note: There is in-app graphical illustration with bubble notes.
Happy Slating! :) 🎉
Why the app takes 'Permissions'?
SlateX asks for certain permissions to support device-specific features.
For example, if you use the Media Attachment feature, the app will need access to your device Camera.
On newer android versions, permissions for Notifications, Alarms & Reminders, and Battery settings are needed for full task management functionality.
If you deny any of these permissions, the app will still work - just without those specific features.
Why do I see 'Welcome' screen every time?
The Welcome screen is a splash screen that greets you and gives quick access to the Getting Started guide.
It also helps protect your Dashboard privacy while still letting you quickly add something.
Don’t want to see it every time? Just uncheck ‘Show me again!’ You can re-enable it anytime from More Settings.
What is 'Due Today' on Dashboard or '&due-today' in Searchbar?
SlateX offers a powerful Searchbar that helps you quickly find what you need - whether it's a task, information, or specific type of item.
Just type any letter or word, and it will search across all item content.
Type '&' or long-press on search field to trigger smart search suggestions based on item types and attributes.
Quick Reference: '&' Search filters

Use these filters to quickly slice through your data and stay focused.
What is 'Thought' bubble icon on Dashboard and SmartViewer?
It takes you to Thoughts screen where you can add ideas, follow-ups, reflections or any ongoing updates to an item - helping you build context as situations evolve without editing the original content.
While mainly useful for Tasks, you can also use Thoughts with information items.
What are the advanced Task Management features?
SlateX offers best-in-class task management with advanced features to help you stay organized:
Set or unset Due Date (task expiry) with System Notifications
Set or unset Due Date Reminders with app notifications, including phone or app ringtone and vibration
Set or unset Repeat Tasks with your chosen frequency from spinner
Additional features available on the Dashboard include:
Task Status at the item level (lower-right circle impression on item)
Thoughts logging
Priority Shifter to adjust task priority and
Importance (lower-left star impression on item)
Note:
You can convert an information into a plain task and vice versa.
To convert a task into information, you must clear the due date if it’s an advanced task.
What is '{ }' icon on MagicSlate?
SlateXObject - data object
SlateX allows easy sharing of items between users as SlateXObject:
Friend A sends an encrypted SlateXObject item via WhatsApp to Friend B.
Friend B selects the WhatsApp message and shares it to SlateX app.
The app asks Friend B to save a new copy of an item or overwrite an existing item.
Friend B then has Friend A’s SlateX item in their app - perfect for collaborating activities like meetings or cycling together!
Note:
If the SlateX item has no media attachment, Friend B can copy-paste the encrypted SlateXObject into MagicSlate and tap the { } icon to copy of an item or overwrite an existing item.
Quick Reminder
An AI template to create quick reminders via text or voice dictation (English only):
Write or say commands like: “Hey remind me to do something after 30 minutes”
Tap the { } icon to create the reminder.
The app follows in-app checks to validate your command.
Note:
Time units accepted: Minute(s), Hour(s), and Day(s).
How Group assignment works?
Group assignment takes place by selecting group from Group spinner in MagicSlate screen while adding or editing item.
By default, new items are added to the group currently selected on the Dashboard.
When editing, the item stays in its original group unless changed while saving.
Note:
The “Into” label next to Groups spinner was removed in version 5.0.
How 'Bulleted list' works on MagicSlate?
To create a bulleted list within an item:
Write your heading on the first line and press Enter.
Each new line after will become a bulleted list item.
To edit a bulleted list:
Turn off bullets then edit the lines, then turn on bullets as needed.
Note:
Bullets won’t work on single-line text.
Why 'Lock' appears on Dashboard?
Short Answer: You tapped 'Marked Private' while creating an item.
SlateX offers advanced privacy features to protect your sensitive data on the Dashboard.
The Welcome Screen adds a first layer of privacy.
Marking any item as Private (with or without PIN) shows a lock on the Dashboard.
If the item is locked with a PIN, it restricts access to that item’s data, media, or thoughts until the correct PIN is entered.
Note: Private items can be searched but can't be viewed if PIN is applied.
How to set-up PIN:
Go to More Settings to enable PIN protection.
The default PIN is 0000 - you can change it anytime.
To change the PIN, enter your current PIN and select Change PIN.
Important:
Once you change the default PIN, make sure to remember it.
Forgotten PINs can only be recovered via About → Get Support (chargeable basis).
What 'Metrics' icon does on SmartViewer?
When you view an advanced task in SmartViewer, it automatically activates, letting you inspect all the task’s related information
What is 'Review Stuck Tasks' in Tools?
SlateX automatically keeps your tasks up to date.
However, in rare cases, you may see a warning triangle on task items that doesn't go away. This means some tasks may be stuck and need manual review.
When this happens:
Most commonly, after reinstalling the app over an existing version (e.g. during an update),
or when your android phone is not allowing background task. In this case, go to App Settings and set Disable Battery Optimization to Yes
After such cases, simply tap Review Stuck Tasks to restore proper tracking.
Why I see 'MindSlate® X: Reviewed Tasks!' on my phone?
SlateX performs automatic task reviews to keep everything up to date.
Out-of-app Auto Review:
Happens when you restart your phone
In-app Auto Review:
When you return from Recycle Bin
When you import a SlateXObject into the app
These checks ensure tasks stay current without further hassle.
What is 'Nickname' for?
Since we don't capture your identity, your nickname becomes important when sharing your items with other apps or SlateX users.
It is also used in Thoughts screen to build context and be used collaboration via Standard or SlateXObject sharing.
Note: The default or absent nickname is 'Self', but you can change it anytime. You can also enable/disable Nickname sharing.
What is 'Appname' sharing?
When you share an item with other apps, if Appname sharing is enabled, SlateX adds the originating app's formal name as a prefix to the shared item. You can enable/disable it.
What is 'Thoughts' sharing?
Thoughts Privacy (Sharing Control)
By default, thoughts added through the Thoughts screen are attached to the item but not shared with other apps - for your privacy.
If you want to include thoughts when sharing:
You can enable it before sharing via Standard sharing. you can disable it again to maintain privacy.
If you choose to use SlateXObject sharing, you can keep it enabled as your entire data object is encrypted.
What is 'Promo Code' and how it works?
A Promo Code lets you increase the app’s default entry limit.
How to use:
Request a code via the Get Code link.
Mention how many extra entries you need.
Paste the received code exactly and tap Redeem.
Note:
Check your current entry count on the About screen.
You might be asked to justify your request or share a screenshot of your existing entries.
Promo codes are granted at our discretion.
Keep your code safe before use.
What is 'Export' in Tools?
Export is a unique feature that lets you take your data out of the app in plain text (What You Put Is What You Get) along with any Media file, into your phone’s public folders.
Your data is never app locked!
It’s highly recommended to export your data before uninstalling the app.
Note:
Your Data, Your Control!
SlateX does not store any of your information on our servers - by design. All your data stays only in your phone, encrypted for your privacy and security.
To protect against data loss (in case your phone is lost, stolen, or becomes unusable), it is your preventive responsibility to export your data regularly and sync it with your preferred storage - such as Microsoft Drive, Google Drive, Dropbox, or physical external storage.
We never see your data. You own it and only you access it!
There are many features which are not documented here. Should you have any query, please contact us at admin@devarcon.in.
