Overview
MindSlate® X (SlateX) is your personal productivity, information, and task management app.
Here’s a quick overview to help you navigate the app better:
Item: Any entry you add in the app is an Item. It can be either:
Information, or
Task – a Plain Task or an Advanced Task with attributes like Due Date, etc.
Reminder - a form of Task.
Each item can include:
One Attachment, most day-to-day file types (Archive, Audio, Video, Images, MS-Office, PDF, etc.) upto 128 MiB are supported.
A series of connected Thoughts (ideas, follow-ups, reflections).
Group: Items can be organized into Groups.
The special group All is default and reserved—it contains all items, including those assigned to other groups and ungrouped ones.
App has three logical sections:
Dashboard – control-center for the app and all items.
Magic Slate – where you add/edit each item.
Smart Viewer – where you view and take actions on item.
Quick Q&A
What is the first thing I need to do?
Getting Started with SlateX
There’s no strict setup, but here’s a helpful checklist:
One-time Activities:
Replace 'Self' with your nickname in the Settings screen
Set Disable Battery Optimization in Settings (for the task masters 😄)
On first use of Magicpad > More Task Options or Detect Pattern (Quick Reminder), allow Alarms & Reminders (for Android 12+)
Then (Optional but Recommended):
Set a Privacy PIN in More Settings (inside Settings)
Create a group via the Groups tab on the Dashboard
Select your new group from the Group Selector tab on the Dashboard
Tap the ‘+’ icon to add your first task or information item
Note: There is in-app graphical illustration with bubble notes.
Happy Slating! :) 🎉
Why the app takes 'Permissions'?
SlateX asks for certain permissions to support device-specific features.
For example, if you use the Capture feature in Attachment section, the app would need access to your device's Camera.
On newer Android versions, permissions for Notifications, Alarms & Reminders, and Battery settings are needed for optimum task management functionality.
If you deny any of these permissions, the app will work without those specific features.
Why do I see 'Welcome' screen every time?
The Welcome screen is a splash screen that greets you and gives quick access to the Getting Started guide.
It also helps protect your Dashboard privacy while still letting you quickly add something. Long press on FAB menu - big '+' icon for quick options.
Don’t want to see it every time? Just uncheck ‘Show Welcome screen?’ You can re-enable it anytime from More Settings (inside Settings).
What is 'Due Today' on Dashboard or '&due-today' in Searchbar?
SlateX offers a powerful Searchbar that helps you quickly find what you need - whether it's a task, information, or specific type of item.
Just type any letter or word, and it will search across all item content.
Type '&' or long-press on search field to trigger smart search suggestions based on item types and attributes.
Quick Reference: '&' Search filters
&task-items – all task items
&information-items – all information items
&important-items – items marked Important
&private-items – items marked Private
&items-have-thoughts – items with Thoughts logging
&items-have-attachment – items with Media attachment
&open-tasks – tasks that are Open
&wip-tasks – tasks that are Work-in-Progress

Use these filters to quickly slice through your data and stay focused.
What are the advanced Task Management features?
SlateX offers best-in-class task management with advanced features to help you stay organized:

Set or unset Due Date Reminders with app notifications, including phone or app ringtone and vibration
Set or unset Repeat Tasks with your chosen frequency (value and unit) from selectors
Additional features available on the Dashboard include:

Long press toggles between Open and WIP (Green Color) states
Thoughts logging
Priority Shifter (Upper-right arrow on item) to adjust task priority & sequencing and
Importance (lower-left star impression on item)
Note:
You can convert an information into a plain task and vice versa.
To convert a task into information, you must clear the due date if it’s assigned.
Why 'Lock' appears on Dashboard?
Short Answer: You tapped 'Marked Private' while creating an item.
SlateX offers advanced privacy features to protect your sensitive data on the Dashboard.
The Welcome Screen adds a first layer of privacy.
Marking any item as Private (with or without PIN) shows a lock on the Dashboard.
If PIN is enabled in More Settings and an item is locked by you, SlateX restricts access to that item’s data, media, or thoughts until the correct PIN is entered.
Note: PIN enabled private items can be searched but can't be viewed.
How to set-up PIN:
Go to More Settings (inside Settings) to enable PIN protection.
The default PIN is 0000 - you can change it anytime.
To change the PIN, enter your current PIN and select Change PIN.
Important:
Once you change the default PIN, make sure to remember it.
Forgotten PIN can only be reset via code clicking About → Get Support (chargeable basis).
What is 'Thought' bubble icon on Dashboard and Smart Viewer?
It takes you to Thoughts screen where you can add ideas, follow-ups, reflections or any ongoing updates to an item - helping you build context as situations evolve without editing the original content.
While mainly useful for Tasks, you can also use Thoughts with information items.
What 'Info' icon does in Smart Viewer?
It lets you inspect meta data of an Item and gives insight on task’s related meta information.
What is 'SlateX Object'?
SlateX Object is the collaborative data object for the app. It is called SlateXObject or SXO in short. You can use SlateXObject for community sharing purpose too; you can share your stuff via any social or communication channel (Drive, Email, Gmail, WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, etc.) or post it on your web-page such as "my info receipe" or "my yoga routine" info content for others to import into their SlateX!
SlateX allows easy sharing of items between SlateX users via unique, best of the class encrypted SlateXObject:
Friend A sends SlateXObject to Friend B via WhatsApp.
Friend B selects the WhatsApp message and shares it to SlateX app.
The app asks Friend B to save a new copy of an item or update an existing item.
Friend B then has Friend A’s SlateX item in his/her app - perfect for collaborating activities like meetings, hobby or sports together!
There are many use-cases, lets see how many you can explore!!
Note:
Physically, SlateXObject is like SXOItemId.zip
What is '{ }' icon on Magic Slate?
It is to detect the supported functions out of text.
Quick Reminder
An AI template to create quick reminders via text or voice dictation (English only):
Write or say commands like: “Hey remind me to do something after 30 minutes”
Or "Hey remind me to call Mom at 7pm after 2 days"
Or "Hey remind me at 10" that is (10 am today)
Or "Hey remind me after/in 15 minutes"
Tap the { } icon to detect pattern and create the reminder.
The app follows in-app checks to validate your command and set the Reminder!
QR Presets are also available on FAB menu (long press on big '+' icon on Welcome Screen, Magic Slate or Dashboard)
Excel like In-line Calculator
If you have task and you need to calculate something like
I need to send invoice to Ms Karisma of amount eval(1.18*70000).
and click detect, it will calculate and replace the value...Kool? You may have any number of evals anywhere in text it will calculate. If does not, then it will keep the same value.
Note:
Both 'after' or 'in' clauses are accepted in command and their time units are Minute(s), Hour(s), and Day(s). And "at" clause description like 7, 7 am/pm, 7.01 am/pm to 7.59 am/pm also 19, 19.01 to 19.59
How Group assignment works?
Group assignment takes place by selecting group from Group selector in Magic Slate screen while adding or editing item.
By default, new items are added to the group currently selected on the Dashboard.
When editing, the item stays in its original group unless changed while saving.
How 'Bulleted list' works on Magic Slate?
To create a bulleted list within an item:
Write your heading on the first line and press 'Enter'.
Each new line after heading will be treated as bulleted list item until blank line.
You can make multi-list content having text/passages in between just like this content.
To edit a bulleted list:
Turn off list then edit the lines, then turn on list again as needed.
Note:
Make List won’t work on single-line or non-consecutive lines.
What is 'Review Stuck Tasks' in Tools?
SlateX automatically keeps your tasks up to date.
However, in rarest case, you may see a warning triangle on task items that doesn't go away. This means some tasks may be stuck and need manual triggering of review.
Simply tap Tools → Review Stuck Tasks to restore proper tracking.
If you see this behaviour more than often:
Meaning your Android phone is not allowing background processes of the task management engine of this app. In this case, go to App Settings and set Disable Battery Optimization to Yes
After that, tap Review Stuck Tasks and you are set!
Note: Keep 'Allow Alarms & Reminders' enabled in App Settings for the devices higher than Android 12
Why I see 'MindSlate® X: Reviewed Tasks!' on my phone?
SlateX performs automatic task reviews at various checkpoints to keep everything up to date.
Out-of-app Auto Review (Verbose):
Happens when you restart your phone
In-app Auto Review (Silent):
When you return from Recycle Bin
When you import a SlateXObject into the app
When you update the App
In-app Manul Review (Verbose):
When you tap on Tools → Review Stuck Tasks
These checks ensure tasks stay current without further hassle.
What is 'Nickname' for?
Since we don't capture your identity, your nickname becomes important when sharing your items with other apps or SlateX users.
It is also used in Thoughts screen to build context and be used collaboration via Standard or SlateXObject sharing.
Note: The default or absent nickname is 'Self', but you can change it anytime. You can also enable/disable Nickname sharing.
What is 'Appname' sharing?
When you share an item with other apps, if Appname sharing is enabled, SlateX adds the originating app's formal name as a prefix to the shared item. You can enable/disable it.
What is 'Thoughts' sharing?
Standard sharing option:
SlateX does not share thoughts (unless Include Thoughts on Sharing enabled)
SlateXObject sharing option:
SlateX shares entire data object including thoughts
What is 'Promo Code' and how it works?
A Promo Code lets you increase the app’s default item limit.
How to use:
Request a code via the Get Code link.
Mention how many extra items you need.
Paste the received code exactly and tap Redeem.
Note:
Check your current item limit on the About screen.
You may be asked to justify your request or share a screenshot of your existing items if frequented.
Promo codes are granted at our discretion.
Keep your code safe before use.
What is 'Export' in Tools?
Export is a unique feature that lets you take your data out of the app in plain text (What You Put Is What You Get) along with any Attachment file, into your phone’s Downloads folder, contained under app name and ordered by export timestamp.
Your data is never app locked!
It’s highly recommended to export your data before uninstalling or updating the app.
Note:
Your Data, Your Control!
SlateX does not store any of your information on our/any server - by design. All your data stays only in your phone, encrypted for your privacy and security.
To protect against data loss (in case your phone is lost, stolen, or becomes unusable), it is your preventive responsibility to export your data regularly and sync it with your preferred storage - such as Microsoft Drive, Google Drive, Dropbox, or physical external storage.
We never know your data. You own it and only you can access it!
